Berlin’s omnipresent ‘cafe kultur’ means you won’t be short for choice to find a great brew in the city. In summer, enjoy the laid-back vibe as cafes overflow onto the streets. In winter, the Berlin tradition of Kaffee und Küchen – or coffee and cake – provides plenty of cosy spots for a delicious espresso and a decadent slice. Here are our top choices – most of which are just a short stroll from ONE80° Hostel Berlin.
From the ONE80°, The Barn is a decent walk through the streets of the Mitte – just over a mile – but the coffee is worth it. In fact, if you’re reverential about the bean, The Barn is the place for you. You’ll know you’ve found it when you spot the ‘rustic chic’ hay barns sitting outside the cafe on Auguststraße. Inside, expert baristas work their magic with ceremonial flair, using custom-roasted coffee, hand-crafted La Marzocco espresso machines and ultra-fresh milk, delivered each day from a farm just outside the city limits.
Opening hours: Monday to Friday 8 am to 6 pm & Saturday & Sunday 10 am to 6 pm
Address: Auguststraße 58, 10119 Berlin
Just a short stroll from ONE80° along Weinmeisterstraße, is KaffeeMitte a favourite of Berlin’s coffee places. Sitting in the middle of the buzzing Mitte, the cafe is surrounded by galleries, restaurants and shops and is an excellent spot for a bit of people-watching. Do try the exceptional made-to-order sandwiches – Berlin’s best, we think. Anyway, the most important element is the coffee, you’ll be pleased to note, is uniformly excellent.
Opening hours: Monday to Friday: 8 am to 7 pm, Saturday: 9 am to 7 pm, Sunday: 9am to 6 pm
Address: Weinmeisterstr. 9a, 10178 Berlin
