The first weeks of February in Berlin are synonymous with the Berlinale – International Film Festival. The world’s largest public film festival, Berlinale screens around 400 films, from blockbuster showings like Monuments Men and The Grand Budapest Hotel to diehard Indies that have been funded wholly from a dedicated filmmaker’s back pocket.
A cheeky nod of the head to Berlin city’s animal of choice, 20 films will compete this year for the awards of Golden Bear and Silver Bear. Yet as alluring as silverware is for the trophy cabinet, it’s those ‘diehard Indies’ like Göran Hugo Olsson’s ‘Concerning Violence’ that makes the Berlinale such a unique entity in the film festival world.
